EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to cut security grants to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “another example” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts point out that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
